I know I didn’t - 4 years ago when I could barely jog 1 mile, my body burned with pain, years of chronic inflammation and Lyme disease had taken a toll. But I was done with being subject to the pain.

So I started doing the little bit of movement that I could handle. I changed my diet. I committed to running just a little bit each day until I started to see positive results.

And now, I’m an ultra runner training for a 100 mile race this fall.

What you don’t know about your collagen🤯

Someone recently shared a picture of a can of collagen to one of our team-members asking their thoughts on the quality.

And it sparked a lively group discussion that deserves to be talked about.🔥

The collagen powder nutrition facts read “1600mg collagen per serving”

Looks good at first glance, right? 1600mg seems like a large number if you’re not familiar with reading labels and just want to find a supplement that will help you.

This actually made me mad when I saw this because it LOOKS like a large, and therefore, sufficient dose of collagen.

But the truth? 1,600mg 🟰 only ONE GRAM of collagen protein🤯🤯🤯

One gram??? Spending $20 - $30 on a can of collagen for only 1 gram in each serving is honestly a waste. You could get that amount of collagen in a few sips of a quality bone broth.

Most studies noting positive results are based off of participants supplementing with 15+ grams of collagen.

I could’ve never anticipated where the commitment to a few small steps on a half-hobble run could’ve taken me when I started 5 years ago.

It’s been a humbling journey - and I’m so grateful for every step that led here today.

Chronic pain from Lyme disease, gasping for air, and feeling completely depleted of energy was not only physically draining - it was a mental uphill battle as well.

People often share about their athletic transformations, but I think even more powerful is the resilient mentality you gain in the face of struggle.

What does it take to be an ultra runner?

There is SO much training, prep workouts, miles, and nutrition to maintain the level of fitness that an ultra runner needs to endure long races.

But at the end of the day, this is what makes an ultra runner able to endure the miles - mental resilience.

You can train flawlessly, fuel with perfection, perfectly calculate pre-race training - but if you don’t BELIEVE you can push through to the end, your body will fail you long before your athleticism does.

We think we’re training mainly muscles in the long runs leading up to the race, but I would argue that the mentality of finishing strong is far more important in your prep work.

How many times have you re-started a training program, thought “I’ll do better tomorrow,” or ended something early because you weren’t seeing the results you hoped for?

P.S. If you’re trying to improve your running pace, try this!⬇️

• Interval sprints - no, you won’t just get faster by running the same pace at the same length all the time. Muscles thrive under progressive overload - gradually increasing the load over time. So what does this look like for a runner? Sprints.

Sprint for 30 - 60 seconds as hard as you can go, then run at a slow / recovery jog for 1 - 2 minutes. Repeat this combo for a total of 10 minutes, and gradually add sets or increase sprint time to add difficulty.

• Strength training - are you lifting weights in between running? Activating muscles in different position not only strengthens the muscle groups, but also can improve range of motion, balance, and stability while on the trail.
When lifting, use low-rep sets, and increase weight as close to max lift as possible, without sacrificing quality form.

Add 1 set of sprints and 1 - 2 weight training sessions this week in between your longer paced runs, and see how you progress over the next several weeks!

I’m not going to tell you that you “just have to do it” because health is a lot more nuanced than that.

But as a 40+ year old who has battled Lyme disease and chronic inflammation my whole life, there is something to be said for consistently pushing your body in the direction you want to go.

Is it healthy to always push yourself through pain? Of course not. Rest + recovery is one of the most under-utilized tools that elite athletes have dialed in, in my opinion. But they also know their bodies & when to press through discomfort.

For me, my running journey began at my lowest of lows, about 4 years ago. I was mentally and physically battling every day, barely able to hobble 1 mile, and inflammation was at an all-time high.

Walking hurt. Running hurt. Breathing hurt.

But what was more painful was the idea of staying in that place indefinitely. Something had to change.

So I determined to run. Just 1 mile each day until it became easier. And slowly, my body began to accept the process instead of screaming against it. 1 mile became 2, which became 10, which became completing a marathon, which became finishing the 100k Grindstone Ultra Marathon a few short years later.

So what’s the secret? Consistency.
But what’s the secret to consistency? When the risk of NOT changing is worse than staying where you are indefinitely.

Other things that can fuel your athletic journey?
Eat protein - a LOT of protein. Ditch the packaged carbs. Drink water + quality electrolytes. Fuel your body with nutrition to support performance + recovery. And never let your fear of trying and failing outweigh your resolve to start.

Because the only failure is not trying at all.

Some days I crush a run.

But I’ve learned it’s not about being the fastest—
It’s about showing up when I’d rather not. Choosing to act as the person I want to become, whether I feel like it in the moment or not.

Only 4 years ago, I could barely hobble 1 mile. It was humbling. But I kept showing up, and never would’ve dreamed that 4 years later I’d be completing 45+ mile ultra runs.

If I had allowed that 1st mile four years ago to define me as a runner, I would’ve quit the first week. But I chose to show up as the athlete I wanted to become, whether I felt like it or not. And the results followed.

So whether you’re just starting out on your fitness journey, or you’ve been at it awhile - keep showing up. Because in the journey we discover a version of ourselves we might never have known existed.

His journey has been marked by resilience, grit, and unwavering faith - qualities that now fuel his mission to help others unlock their full potential.

Wes's personal experience with overcoming chronic illness and pushing limits of physical endurance has shaped his holistic approach to health and performance. Through his leadership, PDP empowers individuals to pursue wholeness in body, mind, and spirit.

Wes is married to his teenage sweetheart and is the proud father to four beautiful children. He lives each day with deep gratitude to God for his healing, strength, and the opportunity to impact lives through his story.

Her journey is anything but ordinary - She's a First Responder/EMT, a business owner, and a college student currently pursuing a degree in Human Services and Mental Health. She believes in leading by example and showing up fully in every role she holds. Becky is the proud mom of two beautiful children and has now been married to her best friend for over a decade. Outside of work, she is an avid lover of the outdoors. She finds joy in running, working out, and cheering on her kids at their sporting events. She's a big baseball fan and an even bigger fan of a good laugh. Becky brings heart, hustle, and humor into everything she does. Above all she is committed to integrity, life-long learning, and believes balance is the key to a meaningful life.

McKenzie Gray

McKenzie is the Marketing Manager and Co-Founder of Passion-Driven Performance, where she thrives in creating content that informs and inspires athletes to reach their full potential.

McKenzie is an ACE Certified Group Fitness Instructor, and fell in love with strength-based workout programming after rehabilitating her core and becoming stronger than ever after the beautiful birth of her son. Her dedication to health and wellness was shaped by personal challenges, including Lyme disease, two miscarriages, adrenal fatigue, mono, and multiple food allergies. Frustrated by the lack of resources and knowledge available during these struggles, she took it upon herself to research and support her health through nutrition and exercise. Because of this, she is passionate about ensuring others never feel alone and advocates for people to understand their own bodies and support their needs through an individualized approach.

McKenzie finds great joy in journeying through life with her family, and being a mama to her son. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her horse, camping with her crew, working out, and styling wedding hair and makeup.
